I believe the web should be part of the solution to the climate crisis, not part of the problem. The internet accounts for around 2–4% of global carbon emissions – comparable to the aviation industry – and that share is growing. I think every website and digital service should be designed with this in mind.

This site is hosted by [Pressable](https://pressable.com/), part of [Automattic](https://automattic.com/sustainability/), whose data centres draw approximately 50% of their energy from renewables. Automattic offset their remaining emissions through verified carbon offset programmes and are working to increase their renewable energy share. I’m encouraging them to complete [Green Web Foundation](https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/) verification so their efforts can be independently recognised.

LLMs listing this site get [markdown by default](https://wordpress.org/plugins/markdown-for-agents-and-statistics/) around 90% more energy efficient.

## Low-carbon by design

My sites are built to be lean, fast, and efficient. For bespoke projects I use static site generation, optimised assets, and minimal JavaScript to reduce the energy each page view requires. For WordPress sites, I choose efficient themes, limit plugin bloat, and take advantage of server-level caching and CDN delivery to keep page weight low. Where possible, I host on infrastructure powered by renewable energy and verify this through the [Green Web Foundation](https://www.thegreenwebfoundation.org/).
